On 25 September 2015, the Member States of the United Nations adopted ‘Transforming our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,’ and with it 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is intended as “a plan of action for people, planet and prosperity that seeks to strengthen universal peace in larger freedom.”
The SDGs work in the spirit of partnership and pragmatism to make the right choices now to improve life, in a sustainable way, for future generations. They provide clear guidelines and targets for all countries to adopt in accordance with their own priorities and the environmental challenges of the world at large. The SDGs are an inclusive agenda and tackling the root causes of poverty and unite us (people on the planet) together to make a positive change for both people and the planet. “Poverty eradication is at the heart of the 2030 Agenda, and so is the commitment to leave no-one behind,”
To translate these goals into actions countries need to develop concrete policy roadmaps to achieve them; to do so citizens should understand what SDGs are and how it came about. Somalis are one of the poorest communities on the planet, as well they haven’t got enough soundings during the global consultations. To empower them I voluntarily translated the 17 sustainable development goals and its 169 targets into Somali language and published 19 articles to one of the prominent newspapers in Hargeisa, Somaliland “Geeska Africa Newspaper”. These articles enlighten the Somali people to understand the global agenda in 2030 and heartened to demand action from their political leaders. This SDGs Booklet is extremely used by the Somali youth and people in development work to use their development purposes, as well as civil society organizations for their training manual on global agenda.
